Stop falls at home
A clutter-free home is a 'no-brainer'. That's easier to do when you live alone. Much harder if there are others around who tend to clutter. Gently remind them or follow behind them.
Good lighting is a must. Put night lights in rooms, especially the bathroom.
Rugs—a necessary menace. Make sure they are secure and don't scatter.
The other day I almost tripped on a bathroom rug. If I had, I would most likely hit the tub. That rug is only used now after I shower.
Research has identified many risk factors that contribute to falling—some of these are easily changeable.
Most falls are caused by the interaction of multiple risk factors. The more risk factors a person has, the greater their chances of falling.
The Center for Disease Control advises
Healthcare providers can lower a person’s risk by reducing or minimizing that individual’s risk factors. To prevent falls, providers should focus FIRST on these changeable risk factors:
■ Lower body weakness
■ Poor vision
■ Difficulties with gait and balance
■ Problems with feet
■ Use of psychoactive medications
■ Postural dizziness
Did you know dehydration can also cause falls? It can cause dizziness, light-headedness, and confusion.
Start right now - go through your living areas and make them fall proof.
